The One-Day School Brings Smiles to Zimbabwe
If you ask a child in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe what her biggest dream is, chances are you will hear, “All I want is a chance to go to school.” Many more students will now see that dream realized thanks to your support of the One-Day School.
From January 13-30, 120 volunteers helped build the very fi rst One-Day School campus in this city frequented by tourists who come to see Victoria Falls. This Maranatha project was much more than the usual tourist group, however. Volunteers helped turn an empty site into two school campuses, ready for students.
The transformation was hard to believe for the local community. By the end of the project, over 700 students had applied to attend classes in the new school. As of March, this number had increased to 1,600.
There are not enough schools in Victoria Falls to accommodate all the children, so the new Adventist School is urgently needed. But the parents who enrolled their children are looking for more than the usual education. “I want my child to attend because this school will teach moral values,” said one parent. A full class schedule will begin in May of this year.
A total of 38 One-Day School buildings were completed at Victoria Falls. The new complex includes an elementary school, secondary school and a large church. In addition, volunteers built 10 One-Day Churches in the surrounding area.
The excited smiles of hundreds of children tell the true story of the impact made in Victoria Falls. We appreciate all the volunteers who helped build this school, and the donors who made it possible. |
